  • “Five years in and the Experiment is still delivering the magic. This time, in Auckland and live from Melbourne. Karl and the team at Monster Valley have created and maintain an important place for creativity. The evening is like condensing a Fringe Festival into one night. However, one of the things that makes The Experiment important is that it doesn’t feel like the artistic works wouldn’t happen without the event. It feels like a moment to gather what’s already in motion, so we can share it, and kick it along. The essential element of requiring artists to produce a genuine experiment gives the art a freshness, and the audience the opportunity to live with the artist on the edge. Which, in my humble opinion, is the best way to be an audience.”

Simon Bowden, Former Arts Foundation Executive Director

  • “At the Experiment in 2016 I tried out my typewriter poem idea, which at the time was very much itself an experiment. The idea is that people give me a topic and a donation and I write them a poem on my typewriter. I had been thinking of trying it out for months but was nervous of the reaction and hadn’t yet found the right venue for it. But the Experiment was the perfect environment. Not only were the typewriter poems a success on the night, but it’s something that I’ve gone on to do around the country and overseas, writing 1000’s of poems. I have taken it to festivals and markets, set up on the side of the street and at corporate events and weddings. Out of all the different work I do as an artist, I think its the one that brings people the most joy and reaches the widest audience and without The Experiment I don’t think I would of ever got round to doing it.”

Dominic Hoey AKA Tourettes, Author and Poet

  • “Building an audience is the hardest aspect of life for artists who choose not to take the standard paths. This could be due to who you are, the content of your act, the style or artistic process you choose to explore. The Experiment is the only festival that gives such artists a substantial audience. The enthusiasm of Experiment audiences is the best - our last one had 80-100 people dancing and screaming from beginning to end. For all my band members, The Experiment is, without a doubt, the highlight gig of the year. And there is no-one else doing anything remotely similar for acts like us.“

    Lawrence Brock, Dubtext

  • “The Experiment was a successful event for our venue and the wider arts and music community of Melbourne. The event bridged both electronic music scenes and local artists, and forged an important relationship between the arts hub of Melbourne and Auckland. We see it as imperative for The Experiment to continue to foster emerging artists who might not have the stage to do so otherwise, and to pique new ideas about multi-city relationships for participants/viewers attending the event.”

Melissa Tan, Manager of Section 8 Melbourne

  • “I will be recommending people attend The Experiment 2019 because this event is a unique, grass-roots K' Road experience. It supports local and emerging artists by giving them space to exhibit and/or perform their art/music within a friendly and inclusive community. The free entry creates a sense of arriving at a house party where all your friends are celebrating their creativity together. This event could be the birthplace of many a future creative genius and it's right that one of the venues sits in the heart of K' Road, an area known for supporting the arts.”

Lauren Kumerich, Karangahape Road Business Association

  • “‘The team at Monster Valley do an incredible job of facilitating The Experiment as an open space for expression that is completely indiscriminate, something that is not easily achieved, or widely available in Auckland city. All artistic mediums are provided a platform to interact with each other seamlessly, allowing for fluid communication between artists who wouldn’t otherwise get to work with one another. I feel that this is so important in our city’s creative climate, as there is no longer a central hub where artists can exist together. Without events like these we are selling ourselves short of what we can experience as a community. It is a sensory smorgasbord of organised chaos that I now love dearly, and will look forward to being involved in again year after year.”
